Researchers at Texas AgriLife Research, an arm of Texas A&M University, announced their new lower-radiation technique on Monday. They filled Mylar bags with leafy greens and pure oxygen rather than regular air; then they irradiated the bags at a much lower dose than normal. The pure oxygen turned to ozone, which also kills pathogens. Although ozone can be harmful to consume, it converts back to oxygen within an hour, making the vegetables safe to eat — with less fear that you’re consuming atomic veggies.
