Francois Henri "Jack" LaLanne, a pioneering fitness and nutrition expert and popular media personality, died on Jan. 23 from complications of pneumonia. He was 96 years old. As Healthland's Alice Park wrote today in appreciation: "Before Richard Simmons, there was Jack LaLanne. Clad in his trademark shiny jumpsuits LaLanne was among the first fitness gurus to exhort Americans to get off the couch and get active."
