A panel of experts convened by the Institute of Medicine is currently trying to determine whether coverage of infertility treatments — along with many other procedures and medical services — should be considered essential health benefits and therefore included in policies available through state-based insurance exchanges. Individuals and small businesses will be able to buy coverage through such exchanges starting in 2014 under the new health care legislation. The IOM recommendation will go to the Department of Health and Human Services.
