Number of eggs, retrieved from women undergoing in-vitro fertilization, that corresponded to the best chances of live birth. The odds of having a baby increased steadily with the number of eggs retrieved, peaking at about 15 eggs — which was associated with a 40% live birth rate — in women aged 18 to 34, according to a new analysis of more than 400,000 IVF cycles. The live birth rate associated with 15 eggs declined with age, however, falling to 16% in women 40 or older. The study found that the median number of eggs retrieved per cycle was nine, resulting in a median of five embryos and an overall live birth rate of 21.3%. [via Medpage Today]
