“I really don't understand why we're letting a TV chef dictate our policy.”

—TAMAR GALATZAN, dissenting member of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) board, which voted on Tuesday to eliminate chocolate and strawberry milks from schools to help combat child obesity. LAUSD isn't the first, but it's the nation's biggest school district to ban sugar-added flavored milk — a move that many parents and, notably, the British TV chef Jamie Oliver have vociferously supported. (Many health advocates including the American Heart Association say the nutritional benefits of flavored milk outweigh the harm of added sugar.) In April, LAUSD Superintendent John Deasy appeared with Oliver on late-night TV and said he would recommend taking flavored milk out of schools — starting July 1. [via AP]
