347 million
Number of adults with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes worldwide in 2008, a doubling since 1980 when 153 million adults had diabetes, according to a study published in Lancet. In the U.S., the number of adults with diabetes tripled over the same time period to 24.7 million. About 70% of the increase could be attributed to a growing and aging population, but the rest was linked with diet, rising rates of obesity and increasing physical inactivity.
