Percent increase in U.S. beach closure and advisory days from 2009 to 2010 due to water contamination, according to a new report on beach water quality from the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). The agency says much of the pollution comes from storm water runoff and sewage overflows. Check out the NRDC's five-star rating guide to 200 of the nation's most popular beaches; stars are awarded for good water quality, frequent monitoring and clear communication of advisories to the beach-going public.
