Average number of new HIV infections each year in the U.S. between 2006 and 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The rate of new infections has plateaued, but remains persistently high despite advances in the treatment of AIDS; in some groups, infections have rapidly increased: HIV infections increased 48% among young, black gay men in 2006-09. The AIDS epidemic in the U.S. is still concentrated in gay men, a group that represents 2% of the overall U.S. population but accounted for 61% of all new HIV infections in 2009, according to the CDC, and disproportionately affects minority populations, including blacks and Hispanics.
