19.3%
Percent of U.S. adults who reported smoking cigarettes in 2010, down from 20.9% in 2005, according to the CDC. That amounts to 3 million fewer adult smokers today, but the five-year decline was slower than the drop seen over the previous 40 years and certainly smaller than the government had hoped. The survey data on nearly 27,000 Americans aged 18 and older showed also that the proportion of daily smokers who smoked less than half a pack a day increased from 16.4% to 21.8% over the five-year period, while heavy smoking decreased: the proportion of smokers who went through 30 or more cigarettes a day fell from 12.7% to 8.3%.
