Percentage of Americans age 12 or older who have hearing loss — defined as being unable to hear speech at 25 decibels or lower — in at least one ear, according to a recent study by researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. About 13% of Americans have hearing loss in both ears. Aging and genetics play a role in hearing loss, the study's author said, but environmental exposures like listening to music loudly through headphones can also contribute to hearing damage over time.
