Grow Books Compostable Books and Toys

Kids are synonymous with clutter, but now eco-minded parents can feel good about adding to their stash, without contributing to the gazillion pounds of useless plastic parts they seem to generate each year. Chicago-based Grow Books makes compostable books and toys, including a $65 recycled paperboard doll house and $15 books that are made of compostable or recyclable paper. If the costs sound high for stuff that will just wind up as refuse, remember that sooner or later, even the most beloved toy gets tossed aside (Velveteen Rabbit, anyone?). Grow Books offers to recycle or compost all their products once your kids have outgrown them or lost interest, if you don’t throw it on the compost pile yourself.
Wikki Stix

Traveling this holiday season? Wondering how in the world to keep the kids from screaming their heads off in mid-air? Watercolors are messy, and crayons have a nasty habit of rolling to the back of the plane. But Wikki Stix — thin, bendable wax-like sticks that can be fashioned into any shape, and cost just a few dollars — stay put. My kids recently received packets of Wikki Stix at an Italian restaurant that was apparently tired of cleaning up crayon scuffs. They contorted the sticks into cursive semblances of their names, fashioned animals and braided bracelets from them and made rainbows on the table as we awaited our meal. No muss, no fuss — and very contented kids.
