5 million

Number of people born via assisted reproductive technologies since the first test tube baby, Louise Brown, was born in England 34 years ago, according to an estimate from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. Each year, about 1.5 million in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatments are performed worldwide, resulting in some 350,000 babies — or about 0.3% of the 130 million babies born every year. The countries that use assisted reproduction most frequently are the U.S. and Japan, but the most active region by far is Europe. [via ESHRE]
