Number of children killed by a mysterious illness in Cambodia since April, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), which is investigating the cause and source of the disease. In all, 62 children have been hospitalized with the unknown illness, most under age 7 and most from central and south Cambodia. Symptoms include high fever followed by respiratory and neurologic symptoms, including convulsions, CNN reports; most children died within 24 hours of being hospitalized. So far, there’s no evidence that the illness is spreading from person to person, and there have been no reported clusters of cases. “We are working very hard, but there is no update. We are still waiting for results, hopefully [Friday],” Dr. Denis Laurent, from Kantha Bopha Children’s Hospitals, which first reported the disease, told the Phnom Penh Post. [via WHO]
