I usually keep a log of calories that I eat per day. I went to the doc to get an accurate basal metabolic rate reading of about 2600 kcal a day, so I aim to eat about 1600-1900 calories a day, I also measure out portions with digital scales to get accurate measurements. you will find that an average portion is about half of portions served without measurement. I eat what I want but avoid high calorie, high sugar foods as they dont fill me up and are short glucose fixes which are digested quickly hence why people eat so much of them. I tend to eat low GI foods which are digested slower. and also get the balance right between carbs protein fats fibre etc. Ive lost about 28 pounds in 3 months and Im not starving or miserable infact the opposite. any less than 1500 calories a day is unhealthy for a guy with my bmr.

"If the goal is to really shrink, your workouts should be 70% cardio."

===

I admit I'm not an expert, but I have to disagree with that somewhat. For one, exercise doesn't contribute that much to the weight loss itself. To run or walk a mile burns about 100 calories, while a single donut has 200-300 calories. So doing 70% instead of 50% isn't going to burn many more calories.

On the other hand, a lot of people (especially women) who try to lose weight seem to do nothing but cardio. Go to any gym, and you'll soon recognize the women who spend hours on the treadmill and the cross trainer but never pick up a weight. And that's not good. The body needs a physical workout that goes beyond what cardio provides.

Congratulations, Kyle, I'm in the process of losing weight too. From your ability to just go and jog, it sounds like you're pretty young. I'm a bit older and heavier, and even walking just 1/2 mile (about 800 meters) left me breathing hard. I was always skinny when I was younger but I put on almost 60 kg in just five year. But now I've lost 55 pounds over the past 5.5 months, so walking and eating less are working.

 I weigh myself daily and keep a log, and it's interesting to see the weight go up and down slightly every day, but the overall trend is down, of course.

I'd just like to mention that I noticed in your blog posting from August 6 that your daily calorie consumption will be around 4,000 calories. Is that from before you started to lose weight? Cuz it is a lot of calories! LOL :)

Yes, this calorie consumption was before I started to lose weight. Now I am changing my eating habits with a proper diet. The most of the calories I got was from coca-cola, sweets and snacks all over the day. I didn't wrote everything down, because I usually eat a lot of different snacks per day. ;)

Thanks for the reply :)
