Session comes in two varieties: an original premium lager, once named the World’s Best Premium Lager at the World Beer Awards, and a black lager that manages to be dark and heavy in taste but light when it comes to the calories and nutrition facts.
Eric Dodds, reporter, on Session Premium Lager: I’m not sure whether I immediately felt healthier after the first sip, but it was certainly refreshing. The lager, while not high on flavor, is also almost entirely lacking in bitterness, which makes it an easy drink. Basically, it’s a pleasant beer that you’d reach for if you wanted something you wouldn’t have to think about and couldn’t stomach the thought of another Bud Light. And it’s more alcoholic — do with that information what you will.
Eric on Session Black Premium Dark Lager: Whereas the Session Lager basically looks and tastes like your traditional, basic North American Lager, its darker counterpart clearly strives for more. The first thing you taste are strong chocolate and coffee flavors, and if that’s your thing, you’ll definitely enjoy this beer. Unlike similarly colored beers, Session Black manages to achieve an impressive level of complexity while still remaining light and drinkable, especially if you enjoy the aforementioned flavors.
Nick Carbone, homepage editor: Session Black went down rich and heavy — not holding quite true to its name, which implies it’s a crisp, light beer — but overall it was still enjoyable. Tasted in tandem with pizza, the sweetness of the malt was well balanced with the salty sauce and cheese. It had me feeling fuller than I wanted from a beer.
