The Food and Drug Administration unveiled on Tuesday nine graphic warning labels that will be required on all cigarette packaging and advertising in the U.S. by Oct. 22, 2012.

Cigarette smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. The FDA hopes that the new warning labels, first proposed in November 2010, will compel smokers to quit and will prevent young, would-be smokers from ever starting.
