Difference in annual salary between male physicians and their female counterparts, after adjusting for specialty, work hours, productivity and other factors. Over a 30-year career, women docs would therefore earn $360,000 less than men. The data come from a study of 247 female and 553 male physicians, all of whom received a highly competitive research grant from the National Institutes of Health early in their careers. The study authors wanted to see how gender affected salary at mid-career in this extremely select, highly motivated and talented group of academic physicians.
