Number of Americans with HIV who have their infection under control with medication, according to government data presented Friday at the International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C. The problem stems in part from the fact that many people don’t know their HIV status: 2009 data show that nearly 20% of the estimated 1.1 million infected Americans don’t know they have HIV. Further, only two-thirds of diagnosed patients have some relationship with a care provider, 37% receive continuous HIV care and one-third receive antiretroviral drug therapy. [via HealthDay]
