Americans are overstressed — and you probably didn’t need a national study [PDF] to tell you that. But the recently released survey — of more than 2,000 adults and 1,100 tweens and teens — by the American Psychological Association finds that the most anxious groups in the country aren’t the ones you’d immediately expect.
Who’s Stressed in America? The Answer May Surprise You
Don’t let the slow guitar music or leisurely cowboy gait fool you: people in the Western United States are stressed out. As many as 85% of Westerners cited work as a source of stress, while 53% said housing costs were their primary concern. Most surprisingly, only 22% of Westerners said they lived with little or no stress, compared with 35% of supposedly hard-charging East Coasters. What’s more, only 24% of Westerners said they felt they were doing enough to manage their stress, the lowest number among all regions in the country. But at least many of them were getting good medical advice: 46% of Westerners said they had been told to exercise by a medical professional, and 37% had been instructed to reduce stress.
