Number of Americans with HIV who have their infection under control with medication, according to government data presented Friday at the¬†International AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C. The problem stems in part from the fact that many people don’t know their HIV status: 2009 data show that nearly 20% of the estimated 1.1 million infected Americans don’t know they have HIV. Further, only two-thirds of diagnosed patients have some relationship with a care provider, 37% receive continuous HIV care and one-third receive antiretroviral drug therapy. [via HealthDay]
