There are no razzle-dazzle gimmicks surrounding this book, a fact that Marla Heller, the author and a registered dietitian, notes on the first page. She promises, however, “no conflicting information, no magic combinations, no forbidden foods.” What she provides instead is a no-frills guide to the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet, a plan originally developed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health to lower blood pressure and cholesterol without medication. “You will eat lots of fruits and vegetables, combined with low-fat dairy foods, lean meat, poultry, fish, some nuts and beans and grains,” says Heller. There are more than 68 million Americans with high blood pressure and 70 million others with prehypertension, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes, so Heller has a ready-made audience.
