As a photographer, Jacobsen is a natural at catching the right moments on film, but trying to freeze a moment with her own children brings her unique joy. “I’m always really surprised that anyone cares to peek into my daily life. Especially since I don’t always focus on the perfect moments. I guess I hope that they gain some joy, some light, and gratitude for what their life is. That’s what my focus is mostly on, these moments I’m so grateful for,” she says.
When Jacobsen first had her kids Riley, 4 and Beck, 3, she tried to do it right by reading mommy blogs and how-to guides and by attending parenting classes. “As my children have grown though, I’ve learned that motherhood is so much more than what my birth story was like, if I feed my kids organic food or not, and if my kids sleep through the night,” says Jacobsen. “Motherhood is about helping to shape these little people [who] will soon grow up and go into the world. These moments while they’re young are so fleeting, I’d rather eat breakfast in bed and snuggle, than stick to a schedule. I’d rather skip school one morning to go to brunch or visit the lake.”
Since having her kids, Jacobsen says she’s gained more grace and forgiveness.” I think we live in an age where as mothers we’re told who we should be, from so many directions. I’ve chosen to simply be the mother that my children deserve, because at the end of the day, despite how many times I lost my temper, or forgot to give them a balanced meal, they adore me. They want me to make up stories with them and run around barefoot with them. I will gladly do that–any day,” she says.
